I braved the crowd, I braved the heat to see the retrospective of #davidhockney before leaving Paris for a few days : dazzling, the exhibit focuses on turning points in the artists’ career, going too quickly for my taste, flashing a few amazing early works (above, Flight into Italy, Swiss landscape, 1962) to better commemorate the recent works of a living legend. And oh, since pictures are forbidden, I’ll trade my catalogue for close details of the rich brush strokes, the shimmering and glitzy acrylic, the bold raw canvas, the paper soaked with pigments and parodies of pointillism – all the textures lost in most reproductions. –
#davidhockney through Oct. 23.
